History of the House

THE SMITH GROUP

Business and Estate Planning

The Smith Group purchased the home in 2016, and has since restored its timeless beauty.  We have been inspired by the sophisticated architecture of the past and created one of the most unique and welcoming offices in Medicine Hat. It is an honour to work in such a historic building.

The Kerr-Wallace house, a grand two and a half-storey brick structure built in 1912, is one of the finest examples of Edwardian era architecture. The iconic tower with a bell-shaped roof is characteristic of the Queen Anne Revival style, which was made popular at the time by the large population of British residents in Medicine Hat.

The distinguished home is closely tied to the business acumen of its past owners. It was first owned and designed by H.J Kerr, a railway contractor for the Canadian Pacific Railway, who commissioned the house for a grand total of $4000. The property was sold in 1920 to Joseph J Hewitt, the self-made business owner of Hewitt’s Hardware. The Hewitt family lived in the home for more than 50 years.
